We decided to choose a sport for our children that all three could participate in, thereby avoiding juggling crazy practice and game schedules for three or more sports throughout the week.
We tried a homeschool gymnastics class, and enjoyed that for a season, but decided to switch to martial arts because it allows each child to compete with himself. Interestingly, it was one of the kids' former doctors who recommended we check it out. I'm glad we followed his advice.
Aside from the physical skills--aerobic endurance, flexibility, quick reflexes, kicks, jumps, etc.--there is a mental component taught as well. We love our Taekwondo teacher because he stresses character qualities such as self-control, integrity, perseverance, and honesty, which reinforces what I teach at home on a daily basis. Sometimes it's more palatable coming from Mr. Kim than hearing it from Mom for the umpteenth time.
Besides, he has a cool uniform, and I don't.
"For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come." 1 Timothy 4:8
