More or Less

Now that Jonathan's birthday is officially over, we can focus on the next two October birthdays in our family: mine (22nd) and Elizabeth's (25th). I thought I'd skip mentioning my birthday altogether but then I opened the mail and found a glossy solicitation for More magazine which boasts it's "the one magazine that celebrates women over 40." Isn't that sneaky timing, sending it to me on the week of my 41st birthday? The nerve.

I figured if the evil junk mail people already know my age, I might as well spill the beans here.

Dear More magazine,

Don't count me as a new subscriber, please. I already get too many magazines as it is, and I don't need to read articles like "Are you in a midlife crisis?," "Are you a closet control freak?" or "Will plastic surgery change your life?"

And in case you're wondering, the answers are: no, no and no.

Sincerely,
Linda in California

After all these years I've realized that More usually gets me into trouble.

More shopping = More bills
More eating = More weight gain
More clothes = More laundry
More stuff = More clutter
More books = uh...oh, never mind.

At this stage in my life, what I really need More of is Jesus. As John the Baptist said, "He must increase, but I must decrease." Hey, is there a Less magazine out there?

And if there were, would you subscribe?

"Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, 'Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.'" Numbers 22:18

  1. Those were actual titles of articles in More magazine.

  2. Oh, I would subscribe - but then, wait, that would be one MORE magazine, wouldn't it?

Loved your entry today. If I were you, I'd celebrate that birthday like crazy. A number of years ago when my hubby turned 40, he refused a party. He's 6 years older than I, so I said "Consider yourself alerted, I WANT a BIG 40th birthday party!" Even as it looms closer, I'm looking forward to that party!

  3. Oh Linda, I hear you! I've just been saying to my husband that I am so tired of having to tend to all the "stuff" we have. I'm actually not looking forward to all the gifts the kids will get at Christmas because they usually involve something I have to pick up or remind someone to pick up. There's a song my singer Michael Card that says "We can't imagine the freedom we find in the things we leave behind." I think ridding ourselves of that unwanted "stuff" makes it easier for us to cling to Christ.

I appreciate your post so much today!

  4. I have never thought of the title More in such a negative way....I really never gave it any thought...but it is pretty obnoxious, isn't it?

    Might as well call it...

    Gimme!
    or
    Lusting
    or
    Wanting

    Yuck!

  5. Thanks, everyone. With Jesus and special friends like you, who could ask for anything More? :-)

Amy~ Actually, this will be my 41st birthday. I celebrated the big 4-0 last year. Like your husband, I didn't want a big hoopla. However, some of my girlfriends ended up throwing a surprise tea for me. To say that I was shocked is an understatement. (I still laugh at all the photos of me with my jaw dropping to the floor.) I was quite embarrassed, but when I saw the faces of fifteen very special women in my life surrounding me, I felt blessed beyond measure. That day will always be a treasured memory to me.

Linda L.~ Hey there, Sis! Welcome to our blog! Jonathan thought your Air Force One story was pretty neat. Hugs to your Elizabeth! (Photos, please?)

Kim~ Loved your comment, to which I can only add a hearty "amen!"

    Donna~ Yep! :-)
